Terror Police Swarm Forest In Hunt For Paris Pair

Anti-terrorism police have converged on a forest northeast of Paris after two brothers suspected of being behind the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack were spotted at a petrol station in the region.

A massive manhunt is under way for the gunmen who killed 12 people in an assault at the magazine's Paris offices on Wednesday.

French news agency AFP reported that two men fitting the description of brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi stole fuel and food from the station near Villers-Cotterets in the northern Aisne region, 43 miles (70km) away from Paris, this morning.

There is a high police presence in the villages of Crepy-en-Valois, 10 miles (16km) from the petrol station, and Abbaye de Longpont where just 400 people live.

Sky's Joey Jones said police were going house-to-house "scrutinising each resident".

Paris Policeman Shot In Head As He Pleads For Life

Footage of France's deadliest terror attack for 40 years shows one of the gunmen shoot a policeman in the head at point-blank range.

Three black-clad, heavily-armed men are seen walking from their vehicle near Place de la Bastille in Paris, before a number of shots are fired.

The camera pans to the right to show a police officer lying on the pavement before rolling over to face his approaching attackers.

He is seen raising his hand, apparently pleading for his life.

According to Le Parisien, the officer was heard in one video clip to say: "Voulez-vous me tuer? (Do you want to kill me?)."

The gunman responded: "C'est bon chef."

One of the two men quickens pace as he reaches the injured officer and, without pausing, shoots him in the head.

In another video shot following the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's offices, gunshots ring out and onlookers run for cover on a rooftop just yards from the scene.

The two gunmen are seen below opening fire.

As some on the rooftop run for cover, panicked voices are heard urging others to "get down".

"Did you see that?" a voice can be heard asking the person filming the scene.

More shots are fired before a witness on the rooftop tells another to "budge up".

The gunshots stop and the men are seen calmly returning to their black Citroen hatchback.

One of them picks up a shoe that had fallen out of the car and they drive off slowly.

Witness Benoit Bringer told French TV channel iTELE: "About a half an hour ago two black-hooded men entered the building with Kalashnikovs (assault rifles).

"A few minutes later we heard lots of shots."

One witness, who declined to give his name, described the attack as like "a movie".

France Falls Silent For Paris Victims

A minute's silence has been held across France to remember the victims of the gun attack at the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

At midday (1100 GMT), crowds of people stood silently in public squares, schools and outside official buildings. Many shed tears.

After the silence, bells tolled at Paris' Notre Dame cathedral and in churches across the country.

Later there were a number of spontaneous anti-Muslim protests on the streets of Paris, where security has been stepped up.

At a Mass in Rome, Pope Francis asked worshippers to pray for the attack victims and "those who are cruel so that the Lord may change their heart".

A major police operation is under way in France as prosecutors confirmed the second terror attack in the capital in as many days.

Several armed officers were at the scene of a fatal shooting this morning in the south of Paris.

A female police officer, reportedly 25, was killed after she was called to reports of a traffic accident involving a grey Clio at around 7.15am.

A street sweeper was critically injured in the shooting, which is now being treated as a "terrorist act" by the French authorities.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said police with heavy armour were seen in Porte de Chatillon shortly afterwards and TV news crews were being pushed back from the area, which was sealed off with tape.

Meanwhile, officers are still hunting for suspects in the deadly gun attack on the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

North Korea Slams US For Sony Attack Sanctions

North Korea Slams US For Sony Attack Sanctions

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

North Korea has criticised the United States for imposing fresh sanctions on its government officials in retaliation for an alleged cyber attack on Sony Pictures.

US President Barack Obama last week authorised a new layer of sanctions on several Pyongyang institutions and officials in response to the hacking attack against the Hollywood movie studio responsible for a film depicting the fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

US investigators have said North Korea was behind the attack in November, which involved the breach of tens of thousands of confidential Sony emails and business files.

But North Korea denies any role in the cyber attack. It has expressed fury over the comedy The Interview and called the hacking of Sony a "righteous deed".

In response to the new sanctions, an unnamed spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry accused the US of "groundlessly" stirring up hostility toward Pyongyang.

The spokesman said the new sanctions would not weaken the country's 1.2-million-strong military.

Homes Lost As Australia Battles Bushfires

Homes Lost As Australia Battles Bushfires

We use cookies to give you the best experience. If you do nothing we'll assume that it's ok.

Thousands of Australians have fled their homes after strong winds and high temperatures made one of the worst bushfires in decades impossible to bring under control.

More than 30 homes are feared to have been destroyed by the blazes in Adelaide Hills, with struggling firefighters warning it could be days before the flames are brought to manageable levels.

Hundreds more properties are at risk and residents of 19 communities have been asked to evacuate.

The state's Country Fire Service said the fires, which broke out Friday in the Mount Lofty Ranges east of Adelaide, were continuing to burn in all directions, threatening lives.

But a cool weather change on Sunday is expected to help them work to contain the blazes ahead of a forecast rise in temperatures again on Wednesday.

"I can confirm that 12 homes have been destroyed and it's feared that a further 20 homes have also been lost," South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said.

"However, the conditions for firefighting have improved. The weather is cooler and the weather conditions will permit aerial firefighting.

'Batman' Killed By Ukrainian Security Forces

A wanted rebel commander, who went by the name Batman, has been killed as Ukrainian security forces tried to arrest him, officials have claimed.

Alexandr Bednov, the leader of a pro-Russian militia called the Batman battalion in the eastern region of Luhansk, was wanted for murder, abduction and other abuses.

Ukraine security council spokesman Volodymyr Poleviy confirmed Bednov's death but would give no further details.

However, the website of the separatist Luhansk People's Republic said he was killed on Thursday by security forces.

Bednov, who used to work as a reserve officer for Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs and was married with two children, claimed to have been working to restore law and order in the region with his squad.

In an interview with a blogger in November he said he had decided to fight for the rebel cause after witnessing rebellion in the capital, Kiev.

He said the overthrow of the pro-Russian administration had been "served with a sauce of severe Russophobia, racial hatred, fascism, Nazism, the superiority of the Ukrainian nation over all others".

Brit Hostage Tours Iraq City In New IS Video

An eighth propaganda video of British hostage John Cantlie apparently giving a tour of Iraq's second biggest city has been released by the Islamic State (IS).

In it the photojournalist claims it is "business as usual" in Mosul and that media reports suggesting residents are "living in fear" are "misleading".

The town was captured by IS militants during a blitz in June when they murdered more than 2,000 Shi'ite prisoners and soldiers, according to Human Rights Watch.

During the eight-minute video 43-year-old Mr Cantlie visits a market, a hospital and a police station.

Talking to the camera, he says: "The media likes to paint a picture of life in the Islamic State as depressed, people walking around as subjugated citizens in chains, beaten down by strict, totalitarian rule.

"But really apart from some rather chilly but very sunny December weather, life here in Mosul is business as usual."

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the release of another video and are studying its contents."

It has not been possible to verify whether it is genuine.

In previous videos Mr Cantlie has spoken under duress from behind a desk and has worn an orange jumpsuit.

The last one in November saw him give an account of what he claimed was a failed rescue attempt by American forces in July.

Other footage released by IS in October purported to show Mr Cantlie in the embattled Syrian city of Kobani.

His family have previously appealed for "direct contact" with the militants, who have been holding him for two years.

Since August, IS has filmed and posted online the deaths of four Western hostages.

UK aid workers Alan Henning and David Haines and American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff were all beheaded on camera by the jihadi organisation.

Spacecraft Nears Pluto After Nine-Year Trip

The Solar System's mysterious "ninth planet" is set to be revealed as never before.

Nasa's spacecraft New Horizons is finally drawing close to Pluto almost nine years after setting off on the three-billion-mile journey from Earth.

Pluto is around 3.67 billion miles from the Sun and, when it was discovered in 1930, it was the planet furthest from the solar system's centre.

But in 2006 it was relegated to being a "dwarf planet" in the Kuiper Belt, the group of objects beyond the region of planets such as Earth.

The belt and the Oort Cloud, another band of icy objects that is even further away, are among space's final frontiers and both are thought to be the source of comets.

New Horizons launched on 19 January, 2006, and has spent the 1,873 days between then and now "hibernating" to preserve its electrical components.

It had 18 hibernation periods, the most recent ending 162 million miles from Pluto, when the signal telling scientists of its activity took almost five hours to reach Earth.

From 15 January it will begin examining the planet and it is hoped that its images will be even better than those beamed back to Earth by the Hubble Space Telescope.

Project scientist Dr Hal Weaver, from the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, US, said the project was "a journey to a new class of planets we've never seen, in a place we've never been before".

He added: "For decades we thought Pluto was this odd little body on the planetary outskirts; now we know it's really a gateway to an entire region of new worlds in the Kuiper Belt, and New Horizons is going to provide the first close-up look at them."
