France Plane Crash: 150 Die As Jet 'Disintegrates'

A rescue helicopter has landed at the site of the Germanwings air disaster in the French Alps to find the plane "disintegrated" and no survivors.

The Airbus A320 with 150 people on board came down in a mountainous region, at an altitude of around 6,500ft, between Barcelonnette and Digne.

After taking off at 9.55am (8.55am UK time), a distress signal was issued for flight 4U 9525 at 10.47am (9.47am UK time) after it found itself in an "abnormal situation" on its route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf.

France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls said a helicopter had managed to land near the crash site but found no survivors.

Gilbert Sauvan, of the local council, told Les Echos newspaper: "The plane is disintegrated. The largest debris is the size of a car."

France's President Francois Hollande said: "It's a tragedy on our soil."

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, said 45 of those on board are thought to be Spanish. Germanwings said there were 67 Germans on board.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was "deeply shaken" by news of the crash, her spokesman said.

French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said debris from the crash had been found at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

He added that he expected "an extremely long and extremely difficult" search and rescue operation because of the area's remoteness.

Emergency workers were not expected to reach the scene for several hours.

Eric Ciotti, the head of the regional council, said search-and-rescue teams were on the way to the crash site at Meolans-Revels.

Flight-tracking data indicated the aircraft plummeted from 40,000ft to 6,200ft in less than eight minutes before it crashed.

French aviation authorities said that the plane, operated by Lufthansa's budget airline, did not issue a distress call and that air traffic controllers had raised the alarm.

Aviation journalist Anthony Davis said: "The log suggests it went straight down at a significant rate, up to 5,000 feet per minute at one point, which suggests it happened in a matter of seconds.

"It is unlikely the passengers on board would have known anything about this. As far as I am aware that the pilots did not send a typical distress call, a squawk of 770.

"They simply said emergency, emergency."

A total of 144 passengers, two pilots and four cabin crew were on board the 24-year-old plane. A spokeswoman for the German town of Haltern said there was reason to believe the passengers included 16 pupils and two teachers from one school.

Two babies were also among the passengers.

Germanwings chief executive Thomas Winkelmann told a news conference the pilot had more than 10 years experience, including more than 6,000 flight hours on A320s.

He said the firm would do everything possible to establish the cause of the crash.

The owner of a campground near the crash site, Pierre Polizzi, said he heard the aircraft making strange noises just before it crashed.

"I heard a series of loud noises in the air," he said.

"There are often fighter jets flying over, so I thought it sounded just like that. I looked outside, but I couldn't see any fighter planes.

"The noise I heard was long - like eight seconds - as if the plane was going more slowly than a military plane speed. There was another long noise after about 30 seconds."

Weather conditions were calm at the time the plane came down and Mr Valls said the causes of the crash were not yet known.

He said he had activated the ministerial crisis cell to help coordinate the aftermath of the crash. He added that he had sent Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to the site.

Reports suggest debris at the crash site is not scattered, indicating there had been no mid-air explosion, and US officials say they do not believe terrorism was involved.

Lufthansa wrote on its Twitter page: "We must confirm to our deepest regret that Germanwings Flight 4U 9525 from Barcelona to Düsseldorf has suffered an accident over the French Alps.

"Everyone at Germanwings and Lufthansa is deeply shocked and saddened by these events. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the passengers and crew members."

German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a tweet: "Our thoughts are with those who have to go through the worry that their relatives may be among the victims."

Captain Mike Vivian, former Head of Flight Operations at the Civil Aviation Authority, told Sky News the A320 had a relatively good safety record.

"Germanwings is a very competent company given it is owned by the main German flag-carrier and it flies basically short-haul routes," he said.

"The Airbus A320 is a successful aeroplane and has been around for over 20 years.

"It surprises me, that this aircraft flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, would have been at low altitude because nobody goes low in the Alps unless you are landing at Zurich or Geneva.

"So something catastrophic has either taken place or there has been a major emergency. If it was the second it would probably have been preceded or consistent with a radio call."

Iraq's vice president Iyad Allawi has told Sky News that Iran's involvement in his country is unacceptable and is failing to push Islamic State fighters back.

Speaking from his office in Baghdad, Mr Allawi said he was very concerned about Iran's increasing influence on the militias fighting the war against IS in Iraq.

He said: "I think the role of any regional power or any power in Iraq's affairs is unacceptable."

Mr Allawi went on to explain that Iran's role "doing what they are doing and sending officers to fight and to lead, and declaring that Baghdad is becoming the capital of the Persian empire, is unacceptable".

There are dozens of different Shia militias fighting IS in Iraq right now.

They may have the same enemy, but that doesn't make them friends. There's a history of animosity.

In a cemetery in the southern city of Najaf, more than 50 fighters are buried every day, according to gravediggers there.

Where you are buried though depends on which militia you fought with.

The graves marked with a yellow logo are for the Hezbollah Battalions, a militia active in Iraq for over a decade and on the US terror list since 2009.

In another part of the cemetery we found the white flags of the League of the Righteous. Their leader is out fighting but his grave lays here dug up as a sign that he's not afraid of death.

What many militias do have in common though is Iranian backing. Iran is providing weapons, funding and has recently carried out airstrikes to support the militias.

The strong Iranian influence in Iraq is not new but just how visible it has become is quite staggering.

Pictures of Iran's supreme leader - Ali Khamenei - are plastered all over the country.

There is no doubt Iranian help is key to defeating IS but many have serious concerns over what this may mean for the future.

Mr Allawi says the posters of Khamenei send chills up his spine and there will be a high price to pay for Iranian involvement.

For him, the main threat to the country's stability is the militias.

He said: "As far as I'm concerned these clusters of militias, whether Sunni or Shia, are the main threat and indeed the governments and regional powers who support these groups are the biggest threat to Iraq and to the future of Iraq."

Mr Allawi also warned: "The failure of this country means the failure of the whole region. That's why it's very important to keep Iraq as a united, federal, democratic country and to get reconciliation on the ground and to build a viable state."

As the battle to free Iraq from IS continues, the larger war between those fighting on the ground - and their backers elsewhere - is becoming increasingly clear.

Iraq's future, and the stability of the region, hangs in the balance.

National Front Edged Out In French Elections

France's right-wing parties, led by former president Nicolas Sarkozy, have won the first round of French local elections - edging out the far-right National Front (FN).

The anti-EU and anti-immigration FN, fronted by Marine Le Pen, had dominated airwaves during the campaign, but fell short of polls predicting it would win Sunday's elections for 2,000 local councils.

The conservative alliance, including Mr Sarkozy's Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), took 32.5% of the vote, 10% more than the governing Socialist Party led by President Francois Hollande.

Ms Le Pen's party came second with 26%, less than the 30% it was tipped to secure from voters angry at immigration issues and France's lifeless economy.

The Socialists and their left-wing allies got 22%.

The mainstream parties will be able to call on smaller allies when voters return for run-off elections next Sunday, while the FN will struggle to find partners, said Mr Sarkozy.

"There will be no local or national deal with the leaders of the FN," he said.

Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls said: "Tonight, the far-right, even if it is too high, is not the leading political party in France."

He called on voters to back either the left or right in next week's run-offs to keep the far right from power.

Ms Le Pen said the mainstream parties were conspiring in a campaign of "hate" against her party, but remained bullish about the initial results.

'Secret Nazi Hideout' Discovered In Jungle

Archaeologists believe ruins found deep in a remote jungle could be the remains of a secret hideout built by the Nazis to flee to after the Second World War, according to a report.

A team of archaeologists in Argentina is studying the remains of three buildings found in the Teyu Cuare provincial park in the north of the country, reported the Clarin newspaper.

The researchers from the University of Buenos Aires have found five German coins minted between 1938 and 1941 and part of a porcelain plate with the inscription "Made in Germany", the newspaper said.

Team leader Daniel Schavelzon told Clarin: "Apparently, halfway through the Second World War, the Nazis had a secret project of building shelters for top leaders in the event of defeat - inaccessible sites, in the middle of deserts, in the mountains, on a cliff or in the middle of the jungle like this."

In the end, the hideout was not needed.

According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, thousands of Nazis, Croatian Ustasha fascists and Italian fascists arrived in Argentina with the blessing of President Juan Peron, who was in power from 1946 to 1955 and again briefly in the 1970s.

In 1960, Adolf Eichmann, who was one of the organisers of the Holocaust, was captured in capital Buenos Aires by an Israeli commando team.

He was tried in Israel and later executed.

Among other Nazis who sought refuge in Argentina were Joseph Mengele, Martin Bormann, Walter Kutschmann, Josef Schwammberger, Eduard Roschmann, Wilfred Von Oven, and Alois Brunner.

British Special Forces Pull Out Of Yemen

UK Special Forces have pulled out of Yemen because of the deteriorating security situation in the country.

Sky News understands they were airlifted from the capital Sana'a over the weekend.

They had been operating in the country alongside US counterparts, who have now also been withdrawn.

US forces evacuated al Annad airbase near the southern city of al Houta, which was captured by al Qaeda militants on Friday.

Jeff Rathke, US State Department spokesman, said in a statement: "Due to the deteriorating security situation in Yemen, the US government has temporarily relocated its remaining personnel out of Yemen."

The UK Government has not commented on the withdrawal of British troops.

Last month, Washington, London and Paris closed their embassies as the country teeters on the brink of all-out civil war.

Yemen has become increasingly unstable amid a power struggle between Iranian-backed Shia rebels, known as Houthis, in the north and UN-recognised President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Mr Hadi fled to the southern city of Aden in February after escaping from house arrest in Sana'a.

The Houthis have taken control of the capital and six provinces.

On Friday, Islamic State affiliates claimed responsibility for two bombs at mosques in Sana'a. As many as 150 people were killed in bomb blasts in the capital last week.

If the group was behind the attacks, it would mark its first large-scale foray into the country and could raise the prospect of a bloody Shia versus Sunni conflict.

The CIA and US military have carried out drone strikes against insurgents in Yemen for many years.

A 2011 strike killed influential cleric Anwar al Awlaki, who was the motivator behind many terrorist attacks against the West and is said to have influenced the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris.

Yanukovich Son Dies After Car Falls Through Ice

The youngest son of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovich has drowned after a van he was driving fell through ice into a Siberian lake.

An aide to Ukraine's Interior Minister said the ousted leader's younger son, who is also called Viktor, died on Sunday in Lake Baikal.

The vehicle he was driving plunged through ice and tilted over onto the driver's side.

The 33-year-old was unable to release his seatbelt in time to get out. Five passengers survived the accident and, according to the aide, "four of them didn't even get their feet wet".

The death has not been officially confirmed by authorities in Russia, where Mr Yanukovich senior and most of his family have lived since he was forced out of office in February 2014.

A similar account of the death has appeared on the Facebook page of Nestor Shufrych, a Ukrainian parliamentary deputy from the opposition bloc and a former supporter of Mr Yanukovich

Viktor Yanukovich junior was a noted racing car enthusiast who headed up the Ukrainian Automobile Association when his father was in power.

Both the Kremlin spokesman and Russian President Vladimir Putin's personal spokesman could not confirm the news of his death.

Local website Life News, quoting sources in Russian law enforcement, reports Mr Yanukovich junior's body has been flown by charter flight for burial on the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, territory annexed by the Kremlin last year.
