China Shuts Down Pro-Reform Magazine Website

Chinese journalists have openly confronted state censors after authorities shut the website of a leading pro-reform magazine over an article calling for political change.

Yanhuang Chunqi, which means China Through The Ages, revealed on its official Sina Weibo microblog that it had been informed its website registration had been cancelled and said it had not been given a reason.

Attempts to open the website bring up a cartoon picture of a policeman holding up a badge and the message that the site has been closed.

But the article which apparently offended authorities is still up on the magazine's microblog.

It states: "In more than 30 years of reform, the abuses caused by lagging economic and political reform have become daily more visible, and the factors for social instability have gradually accumulated.

"Promoting reform of the political system is an urgent task."

It comes after 60 journalists from the Southern Weekly newspaper in Guangdong province issued a complaint after they were forced to change a New Year editorial on reform into a tribute praising the Communist Party.

Another 35 former reporters at the newspaper also called for resignation of the province's propaganda chief.

The state-run Global Times newspaper hit back, saying media cannot exist "romantically" outside the country's political reality.

The Communist Party tolerates no challenge to its rule and has shown little sign of wanting to pursue reform.

President-elect Xi Jinping portrayed a softer and more open image after taking over as party boss in November, but it is unclear if he will pursue the long-stalled reforms when he takes power in March.

Last month, a prominent group of Chinese academics warned the country risked "violent revolution" if the government does not respond to growing pressure for more political freedom.
