Voters have rejected a proposal to abolish the Irish parliament's upper house, the Seanad.
The result deals a significant blow to Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny who had championed the proposal.
The 'No' campaign succeeded with a 42,500 majority and 51.7% of the vote.
An Irish Time poll in the days leading up to the vote had suggested people were in favour of scrapping the Senate.
