Crew Evacuated From US Section Of Space Station

Three astronauts on the Internation Space Station (ISS) have taken shelter in the Russian sector of the orbiting base following an alert.

An alarm went off in the US side of the ISS on Wednesday, and NASA says it is unclear whether it was caused by a pressure spike or electrical fault.

All six crew on board the station - three Russians, two Americans and an Italian - are safe.

Mission control experts in Moscow and Houston worked together to co-ordinate the swift evacuation.

NASA later said on Twitter: "ISS flight controllers are not sure if the alarm was triggered by a pressure spike, a faulty sensor, or a problem in a computer relay box."

There had been reports from a Russian news agency of an ammonia leak, which has been denied by NASA.

Former ISS commander Chris Hadfield tweeted: "I lost count of the number of times that we practiced this exact procedure in the simulators in Houston. Serious risk requires serious preparation."

The space station is the largest man-made object in orbit, and the first component of the structure was launched in 1998.

It serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory, and has been continuously occupied for more than 14 years.

The station is split into two sectors; the Russian segment and the United States segment.
