Eight people have been killed and another 10 injured after a van ran through a stop sign, careered across a Florida highway and crashed into a canal.
Officials said the van, from a church in Fort Pierce, crossed all the lanes of US 27 at around 12.30am on Monday.
Lieutenant Gregory Bueno said there were 18 people in the van. The driver and seven passengers are confirmed to have died.
He said the van "passed through a stop sign and travelled across all lanes of US 27".
He added: "The van then travelled into a steep, partially water-filled canal."
Ten other passengers were taken to four hospitals, including a four-year-old child who is in a stable condition at a hospital in Fort Myers.
"They didn't see that stop sign. They shot right through it," Glades County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Duane Pottorff said.
"It was a sad evening."
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
