Islamist Link To Kremlin Critic Murder 'Absurd'

Claims that Boris Nemtsov was shot dead by Chechen Islamists are "absurd" and designed to deflect suspicion from Russian President Vladimir Putin, a co-leader of his opposition party has said.

Ilya Yashin dismissed theories his friend was murdered because of his condemnation of the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, and believes his killing was ordered by the Kremlin.

Investigators say they are looking into the possibility the former deputy prime minister was targeted for his support for the French magazine, which published images of the Prophet Mohammed.

The theory appeared to gain ground after a suspect from Russia's Muslim region of Chechnya - which held a massive rally against the publication in January - apparently confessed to his involvement in the assassination.

However, Mr Yashin said Mr Nemtsov had "never spoken negatively about Islam" and had merely criticised the jihadists who gunned down 12 people at Charlie Hebdo's offices in January.

"The official version of the inquiry is more than absurd. In my opinion it is the result of a political order from the Kremlin," said Mr Yashin, who co-founded the opposition movement Solidarnost with Mr Nemtsov.

Zaur Dadayev, a former deputy commander in a Chechen police unit, has been charged with murder alongside fellow Chechen Anzor Gubashev, who worked for a private security company in Moscow.

Three other men were remanded in custody when the five appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday.

Dadayev has confessed to involvement in Mr Nemtsov's murder, a judge told the court.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said the ex-policeman was a pious Muslim who had been angered by the Mohammed cartoons.

"All those who know Zaur are saying that he is a deeply religious person and that he, as well as all Muslims, was shocked by what Charlie (Hebdo) did and by comments in support of continuing the printing of the caricatures," Mr Kadyrov said.

On Monday, Mr Putin awarded Mr Kadyrov an order of merit for "work successes," the latest in a number of Kremlin decorations for the Chechen leader.

Prosecutors say they are investigating Mr Nemtsov's shooting under a section of the Russian criminal code relating to murders carried out for financial gain - a sign they believe his killing might have been a professional hit.

"Our worst fears are coming true: the hitman has been arrested but the commander will remain free," Mr Yashin said.

"Investigators' nonsensical theory about Islamist motives in Nemtsov's killing suits the Kremlin and takes Putin out of the firing line."

Mr Nemtsov, 55, an outspoken critic of Mr Putin, was shot four times in the back as he walked along a bridge with his girlfriend near the Kremlin on 27 February.
