Shops and schools have closed in eastern India in an outpouring of anger and shock over the gang-rape of a 75-year-old nun.
Residents in the town of Ranaghat, some 50 miles from Kolkata (Calcutta), were appalled by the sister's "inhuman torture" and have criticised police for failing to find the gang.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "deeply concerned" by the incident, which sparked angry scenes in parliament as politicians demanded to know why the six men had not been caught.
The elderly nun needed surgery after she tried to stop the gang ransacking her Christian missionary school on Saturday.
The robbers tied up the school's security guards and entered the nuns' room. They took their victim to another room when she tried to block their way and raped her.
A security camera in the staff room captured the faces of four of the six suspects, and police have offered a reward of 100,000 rupees (around £1,000) for information.
Police have detained 10 people for questioning, but no arrests have been made.
Samiran Paul, a spokesman for the local business association in Ranaghat, said: "We have called for the shutdown of businesses and shops in this town to support the nun ... and the immediate arrest of the culprits.
"We can't imagine such inhuman torture on an elderly nun who devoted her life to the service of humanity."
Teacher Sriparna Dutta said schools had been closed for the day because "we are all so shocked".
West Bengal's chief minister Mamata Banerjee faced hundreds of angry protesters when she travelled to visit the nun at a hospital in Ranaghat on Monday.
Superintendent Arnab Ghosh said security has been stepped up "in the town and its outskirts to avert any untoward incident during the shutdown".
Mr Modi's Hindu nationalist government has been criticised for being slow to condemn a series of attacks on Christians, including vandalism of a church in the northern state of Haryana a day after the nun's gang-rape.
"PMO (prime minister's office) has asked for immediate report on facts & action taken regarding the incidents," he tweeted.
He has also faced criticism for remaining silent about a spate of mass "re-conversions" of Christians and Muslims to Hinduism.
Earlier this month, India banned a BBC documentary about the gang-rape and murder of a student in 2012 that sparked international shock and outrage.
Authorities said screening India's Daughter could have caused public disorder, but critics accused the government of being more concerned with the country's reputation.
