Xbox Security Flaw Discovered By Boy, Five

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 05 April 2014 | 22.57

A five-year-old boy has been praised by Microsoft after he found a flaw in the Xbox security system.

Kristoffer Von Hassel, from San Diego, managed to hack into his father's Xbox Live account without having to put in the correct password.

When the login screen appeared, all Kristoffer had to do was press the space button several times.

By doing so, he managed to get in by the back door without needing to use the password.

The child's father, Robert Davies, who works in computer security, was so proud he recorded a video of the process which he sent to Microsoft.

Xbox put Kristoffer Von Hassel's name on the website Xbox has listed the child on its website as a "security researcher"

The security team at Microsoft quickly fixed the bug and put Kristoffer's name on the Xbox website, listing him as a "security researcher".

When he saw his name online, Kristoffer said: "I'm gonna be famous!"

It is not the first time he has outwitted technology.

When he was a one-year-old, he figured out how to unlock his father's phone by holding down the 'Home' button.

Mafia Boss 'The Professor' Back In Court In UK

An alleged Italian mafia boss has been arrested on a fresh international warrant a week after he was told he was free to remain in the UK.

Domenico Rancadore had been told by a judge he could return to his home in Uxbridge, west London, after prosecutors withdrew their appeal against a ruling that blocked his extradition to Italy.

But he was arrested in Uxbridge on Friday night on a European Arrest Warrant by officers from Scotland Yard's extradition unit.

The 65-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Saturday morning.

Adam Harbinson, representing the Italian authorities, told the court he was "one of the heads of one of the most powerful mafia associations in Italy."

He said the latest arrest warrant is identical to the previous one, except that it provided assurances about the prison conditions he would be faced with in Italy.

Domenico Rancadore's London home The house in Uxbridge where Rancadore was arrested

Scotland Yard had earlier said in a statement: "(The warrant) alleges that he has an outstanding sentence of seven years' imprisonment to serve for participation in Mafia association between December 17, 1987 and April 13, 1995 in Palermo, Italy."

The warrant was issued in Italy and certified by the UK's National Crime Agency.

Rancadore wore a beige sweater, blue shirt and black trousers and waved to his wife, Anne, in the public gallery.

He was remanded in custody and told to appear at the same court for a bail hearing next week.

Known as "The Professor", Rancadore was arrested in Britain last August after 20 years on the run.

He had won his legal fight against extradition on March 17 on the basis that returning to Italy's overcrowded prisons would breach his human rights.

At a hearing last week, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed they had lodged an appeal, but said it was not served within the statutory time limit and was therefore being withdrawn.

Rancadore fled to England in 1994 with his wife and two children, and lived under the false name of Marc Skinner.

Italian authorities claim he was a leading figure in the Cosa Nostra, a Sicilian mafia group controlling Trabia near Palermo.

He is one of Italy's most wanted criminals and was sentenced to seven years in prison in his absence.

Italian police claim he was involved in extortion, racketeering and drug trafficking.

Afghanistan Goes To The Polls In Historic Vote

The Front Runners In Afghanistan's Elections

Updated: 1:29pm UK, Saturday 05 April 2014

Here is a guide to the leading contenders in the Afghan elections.

Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai

Known in Afghanistan as Doctor Ashraf Ghani, the American-trained anthropologist returned to his home country after the Taliban were ousted.

He had previously spent more than 25 years abroad during the turbulent years when Afghanistan came under Soviet control, descended into civil war and then was taken over by the Taliban.

During that period he worked for the United Nations and World Bank in the US, Denmark and in south and east Asia.

On his return he held various government posts, including finance minister.

He went on to take part in the disputed 2009 presidential election campaign when he won 4% of the vote, but was beaten by Hamid Karzai.

Mr Ghani is among the strongest backers of a disputed security deal which will keep US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

But he has provoked controversy by picking ethnic Uzbek former warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum as a running mate.

Zalmai Rassoul

A relative of Afghanistan's former royal family, Zalmai Rassoul is seen as an establishment figure.

Although originally a doctor, he became involved in politics when representing the deposed king in 1998 on a body that played a key role in the future transition of the country after the end of the Soviet period.

He held roles in national security before being made Hamid Karzai's foreign minister, often accompanying the president on trips abroad.

Critics say that, if elected, Mr Rassoul would lack the strength and independence to make a break from the old administration, which many have accused of corruption.

But a number of foreign correspondents have said that despite serving for more than a decade in government, he remains untainted by the allegations that have dogged Mr Karzai's tenure in power.

He is comfortable dealing with those at home and abroad, speaking Dari, Pashto, English, French and Italian, among other languages.

He is also the only leading candidate with a woman as one of his vice-presidential running mates.

Abdullah Abdullah

A former ophthalmologist-turned-fighter against Soviet forces in the 1980s, Mr Abdullah dropped out of a run-off against Mr Karzai in the 2009 election, saying he was concerned about electoral fraud.

He rose to take roles in government in the post-Taliban period having previously been an adviser to Ahmad Shah Masood, a leader in the Northern Alliance.

But he was abruptly dismissed from his role as Afghanistan's foreign minister in 2006 - a role he had previously held in the Northern Alliance when it fought alongside the American-led invasion of the country following the 9/11 attacks.

Mr Abdullah's base of support is the ethnic Tajik community whose rights and cause, although he is half-Pashtun, he has championed.

He spent some of the period during the Soviet-backed regime in Pakistan.

He took part in the 2009 election after registering as an independent candidate.

Other candidates are:

Abdul Rasul Sayyaf: A former warlord with ties to al Qaeda. An MP in the new parliament.

Mohammad Daud Sultanzoy: A former pilot and talk show host who is known for encouraging women to vote.

Qutbuddin Hilal: Former deputy prime minister with links to controversial mujahideen figure Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

Gul Agha Sherzai: Another former mujahideen member but later governor of two Afghan provinces during Mr Karzai's time.

Hedayat Amin Arsala: A prominent economist and politician who has held several high-ranking government posts.

MH370: Has China Cracked 'Mission Impossible'?

Experts say Chinese search crews will have overcome an "impossible situation" if they recover the black box from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

Chinese state media claims a signal has been discovered by the country's Haixun 01 vessel 1,000 miles northwest of Perth.

The signal is said to have a frequency of 37.5kHz per second - the same as that emitted by black-box devices.

Oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall, from Southampton University, told Sky News it would be a remarkable achievement.

"If it proves this is potentially from the pinger on the black box then we've gone from pretty much an impossible situation to locate this flight and the wreckage on the seabed to a situation where it's very feasible," he said.

"It would mean we've gone from an area of 85,000 square miles down to an area of 10 square miles.

"Because the signal is so weak on this locator, it can't be more than two or three miles away.

A black box data recorder similar to one that would have been on flight MH370. A black box recorder similar to that on MH370

"Even if the seabed is fairly mountainous or there are issues on the sea floor, it's within the capability of 21st century technology to recover this black box if the signal proves to be from the aircraft.

"The search area would be doable but it could take months."

Dr Boxall says the next step is to confirm the signal is from MH370.

This would be done using a combination of side scan sonar and camera equipment attached to an ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle).

If they confirm the presence of a black box, the operation will enter its recovery phase.

This could be hampered by weather, with relatively calm seas required for a whole day to allow the ROV to reach the seabed.

"You shouldn't underestimate the size of this task - it's not easy," said Dr Boxall.

"But you go to something that will happen, rather than something that may never happen.

A map showing the spot where the plane's ping was located The location of objects spotted in the southern corridor

"Possibly when they do that some of the mysteries of what happened to MH370 might be answered."

Another question is which country will lead any verification and recovery, as the signal has been found in international waters.

But Dr Boxall warns there is a long way to go before this becomes an issue.

"Without showing scepticism, it's interesting that this has happened four weeks after the event and it's happened at the point when people are saying, incorrectly, that the black box is going to run out in two hours," he said.

"The black box has a design transition of about 30 days. It could go on for longer, it could have been damaged in the crash itself.

"The ocean is full of noise. Both equipment we use as scientists or natural noises.

"The argument is that there's nothing else out there that will transit at 37.5kHz but we also know the signal was very intermittent, which we would sort of expect - but how intermittent?

"Because this is all second-hand information, then until this data has been looked at by the Australians, I'm afraid to say my scepticism will remain."

Missing Plane: Ship Detects Signal In Ocean

A patrol ship searching for the missing Malaysian passenger jet has detected a pulse signal in the Indian Ocean, Chinese state media has reported.

Xinhua news agency said the signal discovered by Chinese vessel Haixun 01 had a frequency of 37.5kHz per second - the same as that emitted by black-box devices.

A Chinese air force plane has also spotted a number of white floating objects in the search area, according to Xinhua.

The Joint Agency Coordination Centre in Australia, where the search is being overseen, confirmed a signal had been reported, but said its origin remained unknown.

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said: "The characteristics reported are consistent with the aircraft black box. A number of white objects were also sighted on the surface about 90 kilometres from the detection area.

"However, there is no confirmation at this stage that the signals and the objects are related to the missing aircraft."

A map showing the spot where the plane's ping was located The suspected location of the black box

Australian authorities are now considering sending air force crews to the area the signal was reported.

The signal was detected approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) northwest of Perth 10 hours after news channels in China reported that the three Chinese vessels looking for MH370 had relocated to a new search area north of that designated by Australian authorities.

Even if the signal is from the black box, it could take weeks to recover it according to Australian defence minister David Johnston.

Sky News understands the Malaysians were informed of the development by the Chinese government a few hours before the news emerged.

Radar expert Professor David Stupples told Sky News: "If there has been a signal received, it could be the black box or it could be something extraneous.

"I don't know anything (else) that puts out the 37.5kHz signal."

Prof Stupples said he would remain "sceptical" until further evidence emerged.

He added: "My worry is the range. If this is in 2,000-3,000 metres of water, the range of the pinger is one to two kilometres at best.

"My recommendation would be to move the ships with the pinger locators very much closer to this, first of all to confirm this is the signal, and then two or three ships around it to do triangulation to fix the location."

Plane promo

Search teams are facing a race against time to find the black box, which a month after the plane went missing is likely to be running out of battery.

It comes after Malaysia's transport minister denied "extraordinary" claims the country was complicit in the disappearance of flight MH370.

In an interview with Sky News on Friday, Mayalsia's main opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the investigation had been "clearly suspect" and alleged "complicity by authorities on the ground".

But speaking at a news conference, acting transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said: "Let me touch on some unfounded allegations made against Malaysia.

"These allegations include the extraordinary assertion that Malaysian authorities were somehow complicit in what happened to MH370.

"I would like to state for the record that these allegations are completely untrue.

"As I've said before, the search for MH370 should be above politics, and so I call on all Malaysians to unite, to stand by our armed forces as they work in difficult conditions thousands of miles from home, and to support all those who are working tirelessly in the search for MH370."

BRITISH SAILORS STAND ON SUBMARINE TIRELESS AS THEY LEAVE GIBRALTAR. HMS Tireless submarine has arrived in the search area

It was also revealed at the news conference that British nuclear submarine HMS Tireless had entered the search area.

The vessel was expected to play a crucial role in the quest to find the plane's black box, which could hold the key to solving the mystery of what happened.

"I spoke via telephone to the British Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, regarding the nuclear submarine HMS Tireless," said Mr Hussein.

"I hereby confirm the submarine is now in the search area and helping in the search operation."

Up to 10 military planes, three civilian jets and 11 ships have been scouring more than 1,000 square miles of sea off the west coast of Australia.

Missing Plane: Malaysia 'Concealing Information'

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 04 April 2014 | 22.56

The Malaysian government has been deliberately concealing information about missing flight MH370, the country's main opposition leader has claimed.

In an interview with Sky News, Anwar Ibrahim cast doubt on official accounts coming from the authorities in his country and accused ministers of a "betrayal of trust" over their handling of the investigation.

Anwar's comments came as Australian authorities launched the underwater phase of the search - but they admitted time is running out to detect pings from the plane's black box recorder.

anwar400 Anwar said the MH370 investigation has been "clearly suspect"

Veteran politician Anwar said it was "not only unacceptable but not possible, not feasible" that the plane had not been sighted by the sophisticated Marconi radar system immediately after it changed course.

He claimed the radar would have instantly detected the jet as it travelled east to west across "at least four" Malaysian provinces.

He told Sky: "There is no reason as to why they are not able to detect the flight movement.

The home of one of the pilots of MH370, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, was searched as part of the investigation. Zaharie Ahmad Shah was the MH370 pilot

"If you can allow this to happen, then it is a betrayal of the people's trust. You cannot rely on an incompetent ministry to decide on our own security.

"They will have to explain. If they can't, they will have to tell us why this vital piece of information has been concealed from the general public and international community."

He added: "The system is opaque in the sense that they are used to a very compliant media, compliant judiciary, which will only question at the behest of the ruling establishment.

"When the information is available why not cooperate with international authorities and release it?"

Anwar, who personally knew MH370 pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah, has called for an international committee to take over the Malaysian-led operation, saying "the integrity of the whole nation is at stake".

He indicated it was even possible that there was "complicity by authorities on the ground" in what happened to the plane and the 239 people on board.

A Malaysian government spokesman responded to Anwar's comments, saying: "Anwar has made numerous unfounded allegations criticising Malaysia.

"Instead of trying to exploit the MH370 tragedy to score political points, it would be constructive if he could support the government as it coordinates the multinational search operation for MH370."

Anwar was sentenced to five years in jail just hours before MH370 took off after his acquittal on sodomy charges was overturned.

Missing plane

He is currently on bail and claims the charges against him are a political smear.

Attention has been focused on pilot Mr Zaharie's link to Anwar, with allegations he may have hijacked his own plane in response to the politician's sentencing.

But Mr Zaharie's friends and family have rejected the reports that he was deeply upset by the Anwar case or that he was a political fanatic.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott have pledge that no effort would be spared to give the families of those on board the answers they need.

Tony Abbott and Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak Mr Razak met with Mr Abbott at an airbase near Perth

The two countries are heading multinational efforts in the Indian Ocean in the hunt for debris to solve the mystery of the jet, which vanished on March 8.

Mr Razak, whose government has been harshly criticised by some victims' families for giving sometimes conflicting information about the flight and for the slow pace of the investigation, described the search as a "gargantuan task".

But he insisted there would be no let up for the sake of the victims' families.

Afghan Voters Vow To Defy Taliban Threat

By Stuart Ramsay, Chief Correspondent

Mirrored wrap around visors, head-to-toe body armour and machine guns held prone for fighting. Gloved hands directing cars and trucks into security search areas. No talking, no discussion. This is the street outside my hotel. This is security in Kabul.

It doesn't matter where you go in this city, you will be confronted by security at a level never seen here before.

It doesn't mean it is safe of course, the Taliban have infiltrated Kabul, by-passing the so-called "Ring of Steel", carrying out a number of deadly attacks in recent days.

But the checks and body searches go on and they are getting more intense as polling day nears.

The Taliban threats against the public wanting to take part in the presidential election are real, but joining just a few of the campaign rallies it is clear that people are not being put off.

Afghanistan prepares for election The 'ring of steel' around Kabul

They have turned out in their thousands to listen to the would-be leaders, ignoring bomb warnings and actual attacks across much of the country.

The Afghan population wants change and voting is being seen as the way forward.

The election is hugely significant on a variety of levels but that it will be the first democratic transition of power in the country's entire history is in itself both remarkable and a sign of progress - well, sort of.

The fact that all the front runners have been involved in politics and government in one form or other for decades hardly indicates a radical change any time soon.

Afghan election workers lead donkeys carrying ballot boxes and other materials to polling stations which are not accessible by road in the Kishindih district of Balkh Province Election workers with a donkey carrying ballot boxes in Balkh Province

And given the terrible security threat from the Taliban and the grinding poverty that depicts normal life for the vast majority of the population, whoever wins can hardly promise a new life overnight or probably over years.

Hunched over a gas flame, Ghandi Gul heats water to make tea for her five children in the one room where they live.

Her husband died in a rocket attack so she makes a living washing clothes for her neighbours while her children sell street rubbish as scrap.

In good times the six of them live on £17 a week. They want more money for sure, but above all they want more security.

"The only thing we can expect from the election from whoever wins is security," she told me.

"We know that poverty will not change. The only thing we are concerned with is security."

Afghanistan prepares for election It will be the first democratic transition of power in Afghanistan history

That is an overriding sentiment here. Basically if there is better security then prosperity will rise as there will be more work.

As one man told me as he stopped to ask why we were filming: "You can't look for work if you get blown up waiting at the factory gate."

President Hamid Karzai's days are over, but will the years ahead see major changes, better security, more prosperity?

In truth nobody knows and many doubt it. But they have an opportunity to vote in a new government.

For Afghanistan that is a new luxury and there aren't many luxuries here.

Police Hunt Dragon Tattoo Murder Suspect

Police hunting the killer of a French student in Australia have released details of a man they want to question.

Bemjamin James Milward, 25, has been described as a "person of interest" following the death of 21-year-old Sophie Collembet whose naked body was discovered in a south Brisbane park by a passerby last Friday.

Brisbane murders French student Sophie Collembet was found dead in a Brisbane park last week

Police say Ms Collembet, a business student at Brisbane's Griffith University, died after being subjected to a "brutal" attack causing her "brain injury by blunt trauma".

Her death follows that of three other international students in Brisbane in four months.

Police charged 19-year-old Alex Rueben McWean with the murder.of South Korean student Enuji Ban, 22, who was found dead in Wickham Park in Brisbane in November.

Another South Korean student, Min Tae Kim, 28, was found dead at a house in Brisbane a few weeks later and 27-year-old Singaporean masters student Meena Narayanan was stabbed to death in the city last week.

There is no suggestion the deaths are linked and charges have been brought in the three previous cases, but police have admitted the spate of killings is a worry.

Milward is said to be 5ft 9in tall with short blond hair, hazel eyes and with a distinctive dragon tattoo on the left side of his chest.

Police have warned any members of the public not to approach him if he is spotted.

Schumacher Showing 'Moments Of Awakening'

Formula One ace Michael Schumacher is showing "moments of consciousness and awakening," according to his agent.

The 45-year-old has been in an induced coma since suffering a serious head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps resort of Meribel in December.

"Michael is making progress on his way. He shows moments of consciousness and awakening," Sabine Kehm said.

"We are on his side during his long and difficult fight, together with the team of the hospital in Grenoble, and we keep remaining confident."

Earlier this week, Ms Kehm told German newspaper Bild: "There are signs that give us encouragement."

The paper also quoted her as denying reports Schumacher's family are building a special medical facility to help care for him at their home.

Schumacher was reportedly travelling at speeds of up to 60mph when the accident happened, and is thought to have been saved by his skiing helmet, which split on impact.

The racing legend's chief doctor said last week that it was unlikely he would ever fully recover from the accident.

Doctor Gary Hartstein wrote on his blog: "As time goes on, it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

Schumacher left motor racing last year after a disappointing three-year comeback following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006.

Sky's F1 reporter Craig Slater, reporting from Bahrain where the grand prix event is due to take place this weekend, said: "This is a significant step forward it seems though it does fly in the face of recent reports about the state of his health.

"This is a positive step though far from any insurance he is going to make a full recovery.

"Doctors had told the Schumacher family that only a miracle could save him but the news has been greeted with a great deal of enthusiasm and brightened everyone's mood.

"I've spoken to representatives from Schumacher's team at Ferrari; from the lowliest mechanic upwards, they're delighted with the news."

Two Foreign Journalists Shot In Afghanistan

A man dressed as a policeman has shot two foreign journalists in eastern Afghanistan, killing one and wounding the other.

The journalists were reporting for the Associated Press news agency from an isolated town along the country's mountainous border with Pakistan.

Anja Niedringhaus, 48, a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer from Germany was killed instantly according to a witness.

Reporter Kathy Gannon, 60, was shot twice and is being treated in hospital where she is in a stable condition.

Nyaira, Gannon At Courage in Journalism Awards Reporter Kathy Gannon survived the shooting and is in a stable condition

The shooting took place on the eve of Afghanistan's presidential election, which Taliban insurgents have vowed to disrupt with bombings and assassinations.

The pair were in their own car in a convoy of election workers driving through Khost. The convoy was protected by the Afghan National Army and Afghan police.

As they were sitting in the car waiting for the convoy to move, a police unit commander named Naqibullah walked up to the car, yelled "Allahu Akbar" - God is Great - and opened fire on them in the back seat with an AK-47.

He then surrendered to the other police and was arrested.

Ms Niedringhaus began her career at a local newspaper in Germany at the age of 16 then joined the AFP news agency in 1990.

She covered the war in the former Yugoslavia for more than a decade and continued to report on conflict around the world from 2002. She regularly reported on the Olympic Games.

In 2005 she was part of a team of 11 photographers who won the Pulitzer Prize in the breaking news category for her coverage of the war in Iraq.

She was experienced working in Afghanistan and spent months covering the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

Her work appeared in newspapers around the world and was exhibited in galleries and museums in Frankfurt, Berlin, London and Canada.

Ms Gannon is a Canadian journalist based in Islamabad who has covered conflict in Afghanistan for 30 years.

AP executive editor Kathleen Carroll said: "Anja was a vibrant, dynamic journalist well-loved for her insightful photographs, her warm heart and joy for life. We are heartbroken at her loss."

Afghan voters have vowed to defy the threat of military attacks and have attended rallies in their thousands, ignoring bomb warnings and attacks across much of the country.

The new president will succeed Hamid Karzai, who has been in power since 2001 when the Taliban fell.

Last month, Afghan journalist Sardar Ahmad was killed when Taliban gunmen opened fire in a luxury hotel in the centre of Kabul.

British-Swedish journalist Nils Horner was shot dead on a Kabul street on March 11, 2014. An unverified claim later appeared on the website of the Fidai Mahaz group claiming responsibility.

Airlines Warned Flying Over Crimea 'Risky'

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 03 April 2014 | 22.56

Airlines have been warned to avoid the airspace over Crimea after it voted to split from Ukraine and was annexed by Russia.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said there were "serious risks to the safety of international civil flights" after Russia said it intended to take over air traffic control over the peninsula.

The warning came as Russia summoned the German ambassador to Moscow over remarks made by the country's finance minister.

"We consider such pseudo-historical references by the German minister provocative," it said in a statement.

"The comparisons by him are a gross manipulation of historic facts."

Wolfgang Schaeuble said Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region were reminiscent of Adolf Hitler's aggression in 1938 that led to the annexation of German-speaking regions of Czechoslovakia.

The EASA said it was advising planes to avoid Crimean airspace citing an "unsafe situation", because of the possible risks posed by two countries trying to control it.

Chile Hit By Second Powerful Earthquake

A second powerful earthquake has struck off northern Chile, a day after the region was hit by a deadly 8.2-magnitude tremor.

The 7.6-magnitude quake rattled buildings and triggered a new round of evacuations, although a tsunami alert issued for coastal communities was soon lifted.

It also caused a number of landslides near Alto Hospicio, a poor area in the hills above the port town of Iquique, where 2,500 homes and many fishing boats were damaged by Tuesday's quake.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who had travelled to nearby Arica to see how the city had been affected by the earlier disaster, was among those who fled a hotel.

A woman walks next to a destroyed house in Iquique, northern Chile, after a powerful earthquake Authorities estimate about 2,500 homes were damaged by Tuesday's quake

"I was evacuated like all citizens," she tweeted soon afterwards. "One can see that the people are prepared."

Authorities said six people were killed in Tuesday's earthquake but said further victims may be found as rescuers search older buildings in remote areas.

Schools in northern Chile remain closed amid fears of more aftershocks.

People living in the area have been expecting major tremors for years.

However, the so-called mega-quake many residents fear may be yet happen, according to Paul Earle, a seismologist at the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Chile is especially vulnerable to earthquakes because the Nazca and South American tectonic plates rub up against each other off the country's west coast.

Officials had reinforced emergency procedures after an unusually large amount of seismic activity in recent weeks, while residents had prepared by stocking up on food and rehearsing evacuation plans.

Tuesday's quake was located 14 miles south of Iquique at a depth of about 25 miles, according to the USGS.

Shark Takes Swimmer Near Australia Beach

Rescue crews are searching for the remains of a keen swimmer who was dragged away by a shark off a popular beach in Australia.

Christine Armstrong was attacked as she attempted to swim the 1,970ft (600m) stretch between the wharf and beach near the village of Tathra, 210 miles (340km) south of Sydney.

The 63-year-old was part of a group who met at the beach every morning to swim out to the wharf and back.

Mrs Armstrong's family said she had been swimming at the beach for 14 years and had been a trainer at the local volunteer lifeguard club.

"Swimming brought her much joy and many friends," they said in a statement.

"She will be sadly missed by all who loved her, especially by Rob, her husband of 44 years."

A helicopter and boat are being used in the search for her remains.

The species of the shark involved in the attack is not known at this stage.

The Tathra Wharf to Waves - a swim from the wharf to the beach and back - is an annual event that attracts hundreds of swimmers every summer.

Sharks are common off Australia's coast, but the country has averaged fewer than two fatal attacks per year in recent decades.

Two men were killed in attacks off the east and west coasts within the space of a week in November - the only deaths in 2013.

On Wednesday police found the remains of a 38-year-old man who was reported missing last week after going diving south of the west coast city of Perth.

The remains had shark bites, but police said it is not clear whether the man had been bitten before or after he died.

Miley And Justin Gigs At Risk After US Sanctions

Miley Cyrus and Justin Timberlake's concerts in Finland are at risk of being cancelled because of US sanctions against Russia.

The Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, where both stars are due to perform, is owned by Russian Gennady Timchenko, co-founder of oil trader Gunvor, and brothers Boris and Arkady Rotenberg.

All three were included in a list of visa bans and asset freezes imposed by the US against close allies of President Vladimir Putin last month following Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine.

Concert promoter Live Nation Finland said its lawyers were discussing with US authorities whether the sanctions against the venue's owners would bar planned shows by American artists.

Timberlake has a sold-out concert in May and Cyrus is due to perform there in June.

"We are examining the possibility whether this could have an impact on American artists' shows," said Nina Castren, the chief executive of Live Nation Finland.

"If it does, then we will need to come up with a different solution. But I believe that the problem will be solved and the concerts will be held."

Mr Timchenko and the Rotenbergs bought a stake in Helsinki ice-hockey team Jokerit along with the arena, which is the team's home rink, last year.

Other acts due to perform at the Hartwall Arena include Robbie Williams and Elton John, but they will not be affected because they are British acts.

Six Possible Answers To Missing Plane Mystery

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 02 April 2014 | 22.57

The mystery of what made flight MH370 crash thousands of miles off route in the middle of the southern Indian Ocean has filled news websites and TV bulletins for the past three weeks.

But despite the huge interest and speculation, are we any nearer to finding out what happened to the doomed Boeing 777 now than when it vanished from radar on March 8?

What we do know is both the plane's transponder and Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), an in-flight digital system that helps track planes after they have gone out of radar coverage, were disabled or stopped working less than an hour into the flight.

The Malaysia Airlines jet carrying 239 people then flew west for at least five hours before crashing somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

Six theories remain for why the plane disappeared - cabin depressurisation, toxic fumes, fire, a hijacking, a pilot murder-suicide or simultaneous failures.

Fariq Abdul Hamid & Zaharie Ahmad Shah The homes of the two pilots have been searched by police

A panel of experts - including pilots, airline bosses, manufacturers and regulators - met in central London on Tuesday and tried to throw light on the mystery.

The event, organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), came up with this analysis:

1. The aircraft depressurised, but continued to fly

This would explain the initial change in altitude and heading, as well as subsequent lack of communication, but not why the ACARS and transponder were turned off.

The transponder can be turned off from the cockpit and is done routinely when an aircraft lands.

Turning off the ACARS is more complicated, though, and would need someone with systems knowledge going into the aircraft's avionics bay - but this should have been prevented if security was adequate.

If the plane was depressurised, it would continue to fly automatically until the fuel ran out.

The effect on passengers would vary depending on the altitude. If the aircraft was above 35,000ft, it would take about one minute before everyone was incapacitated.

Oxygen masks should have descended automatically which would work for around 15 minutes.

The flight crew could have lasted longer using their oxygen masks, depending on whether they used pure oxygen or an oxygen mix.

SUMMARY: Possible.

missing plane The transcript reveals the last words of one of the pilots to ATC

2. The aircraft was overcome by toxic fumes

The pilots should have been able to send out a distress call and, again, it does not explain why the ACARS and transponder were turned off.

SUMMARY: Unlikely.

3. There was an onboard fire which damaged the communications systems

This would explain the lack of communication, but it is unlikely the aircraft would have then continued to fly as long as it did if the fire continued to burn.

The aircraft's communication systems could have also been disabled by power failure or sabotage.

Birdstrike is possible, but is unlikely to have caused such damage.

SUMMARY: Unlikely.

Search Continues For MH370 After Multiple Sightings Of Possible Debris A pinger locator is being carried to the search area by ADV Ocean Shield

4. The aircraft was hijacked

The aircraft was not flown to another destination, nor was it used as a weapon for a suicide terrorist attack.

If it was an individual hijacker, then no one person or motive has been established and, if it was a group, no organisation has claimed responsibility.

SUMMARY: Possible.

5. The aircraft was deliberately diverted by the pilot/co-pilot

No reason for this has been identified. If it was a suicide attempt then why did the aircraft continue to fly for so long?

Another question is why there were no mobile phone calls or texts from passengers or cabin crew, given the in-flight entertainment (IFE) map would have shown the aircraft going off course.

One explanation is the IFE system was turned off.

The second is most passengers were asleep or did not realise anything was wrong until it was too late to do anything. If they tried to phone later, the aircraft would have been in a remote area over the ocean where there was no signal.

The third is passengers and cabin crew may have been incapacitated in some way, such as by hypoxia due to cabin depressurisation.

SUMMARY: Possible.

Search for MH370 in Indian Ocean Despite a massive air and sea search, no debris from the jet has been found

6. Simultaneous failures

One technical expert pointed out that for every plausible scenario, there is at least one contradictory statement.

"If it was hypoxia, then who turned the aircraft?" he asked.

"If it was a fire, then how did it continue flying? If it was the flight crew, then why did the cabin crew not intervene?"

He suggested that, perhaps, more than one scenario occurred simultaneously - such as a wiring fire and depressurisation.

OVERALL SUMMARY: Until more evidence is found, nothing can be proved.

Nato Chief: Russia Ready To Invade Ukraine

Nato's top military commander says Russia is ready to invade Ukraine and could "accomplish its objectives" in three to five days.

Nato's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, said the organisation had spotted signs of movement by a very small part of the Russian force overnight but no indication that it was returning to barracks.

Gen Breedlove said the situation is "incredibly concerning" as Russia has all the forces it needs on Ukraine's border if it decides to carry out an "incursion" into the country.

Nato foreign ministers meeting in Brussels have asked the general to draw up a package including land, air and sea reinforcements to reassure nervous allies in eastern Europe by April 15.

His comments came as Nato suspended all practical cooperation with Moscow in protest at its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Russia has responded by accusing the alliance of reverting to the language of the Cold War and said neither side would gain from the move.

A Russian serviceman directs Russian tanks after their arrival in Crimea in the settlement of Gvardeiskoye near the Crimean city of Simferopol A Russian soldier directs a tank after its arrival in Crimea

"The language of the statements rather resembles the verbal jousting of the Cold War era," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

He said the move sparked a sense of deja vu - referring to Russia's five-day war with Georgia in 2008, when Nato withdrew cooperation but later resumed it of its own accord.

Mr Lukashevich said: "It is hard to imagine who will gain from the suspension of cooperation between Russia and Nato on countering modern threats and challenges to international and European security, in particular in areas such as the fight against terrorism, piracy and natural and man-made disasters.

"In any case, it will certainly not be Russia or Nato member states."

The diplomatic row comes a day after Russia signalled it would pull back some troops massing on the Ukraine border.

The German government said President Vladimir Putin had assured Chancellor Angela Merkel that he had "ordered a partial withdrawal" of military forces.

Western fears of a new incursion into eastern or southern Ukraine by Moscow have been growing since last week, when a build-up of Russian troops along the border was seen.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Russian troops gathering on the border were concealing their positions and establishing supply lines that could be used in a prolonged deployment, according to officials briefed on the latest US intelligence.

The assessments prompted concerns that Russia is preparing to invade Ukraine without warning, rather than carrying out military exercises as it has claimed.

Fourth Foreign Student Murdered In Brisbane

A Frenchwoman has become the fourth foreign student to be murdered in Brisbane, Australia, in almost as many months.

The battered and naked body of Sophie Collombet, 21, was found in a park near her apartment after what police called a "brutal attack".

Detective Inspector Rod Kemp told reporters: "We believe the cause of death is a brain injury from blunt trauma. It's a particularly aggressive attack."

Brisbane murders Police admit the spate of student murders is 'a concern'

The business student was found with no possessions apart from some jewellery. Police divers have been searching a nearby river for her clothes and bag.

Queensland police said on Tuesday they have no suspects but have spoken to a number of people and are reviewing CCTV footage.

Det Insp Kemp said Ms Collombet's family, who have been liaising with the French Consulate in Brisbane are "just in shock".

Brisbane murders Masters student Meena Narayanan was stabbed to death

The exchange student's death follows the stabbing of 27-year-old Singaporean masters student Meena Narayanan in the city last week.

South Korean Eunji Ban, 23, was found battered to death in a central Brisbane park on November 24, 2013 and Min Tae Kim, 28 - also South Korean and the only male victim - was found in a shallow grave on December 19.

There is no suggestion that the deaths are linked and charges have been brought in the three previous cases, but police have admitted that the spate of killings is a worry.

Det Insp Kemp said: "We are a safe society, I believe. But now this is the (fourth) international student (to be killed), and of course it's a concern to us."

Police said the victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Last year 30 people were murdered in Brisbane.

Queensland state Premier Campbell Newman has insisted visitors from overseas had nothing to fear.

North Korean Marathon Open To Fast Foreigners

The normally secretive city of Pyongyang has agreed to open its streets to tourists by allowing foreign runners to compete in its annual marathon.

However, amateur athletes taking on the 26-mile tour of North Korea's capital must cross the finish line within four hours, or face being led back to the 70,000-seater stadium where the race begins.

Despite the threat, tourism companies say they have been inundated with foreigners seeking a place in the April 13 event, which will offer a rare glimpse into life in the North Korean capital.

The Mangyongdae Prize International Marathon has previously only been open to a select group of elite runners, with men and women required to finish within two hours 27 minutes and two hours 38 minutes respectively.

Simon Cockerell, a Beijing-based travel agent, said: "I think a lot of the attraction is the Pyongyang part rather than the marathon part.

"A lot of the people going along to take part are interested in simply doing something a bit unusual, something that would cause a bit of (discomfort) among friends of theirs when they tell them they ran a marathon in North Korea."

A North Korean couple riding on a bicycle in central Pyongyang Runners will lap many famous landmarks, including Pyongyang's Taedong River

The marathon will start at the stadium named after North Korea's first leader, Kim Il Sung, before passing the Monument to Chinese Soldiers and Kim Il Sung University, crossing over the Taedong River and returning to the stadium - a lap of the city that must be completed four times.

The gruelling race coincides with commemorations to mark the 102nd anniversary of Mr Kim's birth on April 15.

North Korea's government recently announced plans to boost tourism, opening a luxury ski resort aimed at winter sports enthusiasts from abroad among other initiatives.

Sport is also being given a higher profile in the country, with leader Kim Jong Un famously meeting US basketball star Dennis Rodman earlier this year.

The retired sportsman sang Happy Birthday to the 31-year-old, before declaring: "I love the guy. He's my friend, forever and ever and ever."

Stiletto Murder Trial: Man 'Stabbed 25 Times'

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 01 April 2014 | 22.57

A prosecutor has told a court that a Houston woman killed her boyfriend by stabbing him with her stiletto heel 25 times in the face.

Ana Trujillo, 45, is on trial in the Texas city for murdering Alf Stefan Andersson.

Prosecutors say she killed him during an argument at his condominium in June.

Trujillo's lawyer said she was attacked by Mr Andersson and that she defended herself using the only weapon she had available.

Ana Lilia Trujillo and Alf Stefan Andersson Mr Andersson was originally from Sweden

Mr Andersson, 59, was a native of Sweden who had become a US citizen and was a University of Houston professor and researcher.

Sarah Mickelson, the leading prosecutor in the case, said Trujillo had a history of being angry and aggressive in her contentious on-again, off-again relationship with Mr Andersson.

On the night Mr Andersson was killed, the couple were out drinking before they returned to his apartment, where the two began arguing, according to the prosecution.

Ms Mickelson told jurors during the confrontation, Mr Andersson was injured and fell on his back.

The court heard Trujillo sat on him, preventing him from getting up, and repeatedly struck him in the face and head with her shoe.

The shoe was described by prosecutors as a size nine, closed-toe blue suede pump, with a five-and-a-half inch (14cm) heel.

"The one thing we can be sure of in this case is that Ana Trujillo is not a victim," Ms Mickelson said.

Ana Trujillo in court Trujillo says she acted in self-defence

"Ana Trujillo struck Stefan Andersson 25 times with the heel of her shoe while he lay on the floor and bled out."

Trujillo's attorney, John Carroll, described Mr Andersson as an alcoholic who would become violent toward his girlfriend.

He said on the night of Mr Andersson's death, Trujillo planned to leave him and go to a friend's house, but Mr Andersson slammed her against a wall, grabbed her and threw her over a couch.

"She couldn't breathe. And she was begging and begging (Andersson) to let her go," the lawyer said.

"He started suffocating her. She did the only thing she could do, take a weapon at her disposal, which was a shoe, and started hitting him."

Trujillo is currently free on a $100,000 bond.

The trial continues.

Drone Crashes Near Disputed Korean Border

An unmanned drone has crashed on a South Korean island close to the disputed maritime border with the communist North.

The unidentified aircraft fell on Baeknyeong island on the same day as artillery fire was exchanged in the area between forces from the North and South.

The South Korean military are reported to be examining any possible link to spying operations by Pyongyang.

An official is reported as saying the drone is up to 10 feet long, with a Japanese engine and Chinese parts, along with a small camera.

North Korean drones North Korean "drones" on show at a military parade last year

The drone is similar to another found in a border city last month.

North Korea released footage last year of practice drones modified to crash into set targets, but is not thought to have unmanned craft capable of carrying out air strikes or long-range surveillance flights.

The discovery is likely to further heighten tensions in the area after Pyongyang carried out live firing drills that saw more than 100 shells fall in South Korean waters.

Seoul responded to what it branded "premeditated provocation", with its own artillery and scrambled fighter jets.

The US also condemned North Korea's actions as "dangerous and provocative".

Anxious residents sought refuge in shelters on Yeonpyeong island, where North Korean artillery killed four South Koreans in 2010.

Joint US and South Korean military exercises The US and South Korea are carrying out joint military exercises

The de facto maritime border between the two countries - the Northern Limit Line - is not recognised by Pyongyang.

The artillery exchange came a day after North Korea warned it had not ruled out a fourth test of its nuclear deterrent in retaliation for the US conducting "madcap nuclear war" exercises in South Korea this month.

Every year the US and South Korea conduct joint battle exercises involving around 12,500 US and as many as 200,000 South Korean troops.

The annual drills are regularly condemned by the North as preludes to a US invasion, though Washington insists the exercises are defensive.

China called for calm, while Russia said it was "worried" by Pyongyang's declaration it may conduct a further nuclear test.

North Korea last week tested two missiles capable of hitting Japan.

Ebola: Guinea Facing 'Unprecedented Epidemic'

Doctors Without Borders has said an Ebola outbreak in Guinea has become an "unprecedented epidemic", as neighbouring Liberia confirms its first cases.

In a statement, the charity, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said the geographic scale of the epidemic was unmatched.

MSF coordinator Mariano Lugli said: "We are facing an epidemic of a magnitude never before seen in terms of the distribution of cases in the country."

Mr Lugli said previous outbreaks handled by MSF were "much more geographically contained and involved more remote locations."

He added: "This geographical spread is worrisome because it will greatly complicate the tasks of the organisations working to control the epidemic."

Guinea's health ministry has reported 122 suspected cases, with at least 78 deaths linked to the virus. Of those there are 22 laboratory confirmed cases.

Some of the cases are in Guinea's capital Conakry. Liberia also confirmed its first cases overnight on Sunday.

One of two women who tested positive for the virus has died, while the other, her sister, has been isolated in a medical centre outside the capital Monrovia.

Sierra Leone is investigating five suspected cases, although none have yet been confirmed.

Ben Neuman, a virologist with the University of Reading, told Sky News: "The real worry is that this virus has been found in Conakry.

"This is a city where the population density is getting close to 10,000 per square kilometre and setting one of these at least mildly contagious viruses loose in that kind of population centre really has the makings of a humanitarian disaster."

It is not only the geographic scale which makes this outbreak more severe.

There are five recognised strains of Ebola - four of which are deadly to humans.

The Guinean government says the strain it is currently observing is the 'Zaire' strain - the most aggressive of the five. It kills roughly 90% of its victims.

There is no known treatment or vaccine.

The outbreak has spread panic among other countries in the region.

Senegal has closed its border with Guinea and suspended weekly markets near the border to prevent the virus travelling further.

Sierra Leone has introduced a screening process on its border with Guinea, while regional airline Gambia Bird has delayed the launch of services to Guinea's capital.

MSF has sent dozens of aid workers into Guinea in an attempt to prevent a further spread.

It said a total of 60 people, experienced in working on haemorrhagic fever, will be in the country by the end of the week.
